Why slating's important and how to do it like a PRO
Slating is such a basic and common part of auditions, most actors don’t give it a second thought. But they should. It’s the first impression you make on a casting director and the power of a first impression cannot be underestimated.
But what is there to slating? It’s just saying your name to a camera — what is there to learn and understand when it’s so simple? You’d be surprised.
If it was so simple that anyone could do it, then casting directors wouldn’t constantly complain about the awful slates they get to witness on a regular basis. People going overboard, people underdelivering, people adding useless info, and so much more. There’s a million ways to do it wrong.
Slating well is a balancing game. You can’t do too much and you can’t do too little. You have to know what to say, how to say it, how to pace yourself, how to stand, what to wear.
Luckily for you, we’ve created a guide for beginners and pros alike that will ensure your slate charms the casting director from the get-go.
